Denomination Founder.
Otterbein was born in Prussia. He was the son of a minister and was himself ordained. In 1752 he travelled to America as a missionary. Initially he served a German Reformed congregation in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His ministry was highly successful and in 1800, with Martin boehm, he founded the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. This was a sect of the Methodist type, Arminian in theology and episcopal in organisation. In 1946 it merged with the Evangelical Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren. This subsequently joined with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church in 1948.
